Horse Trekking

Horse trekking is a great activity and a great way to connect with the outdoors. Whether an experienced or a novice rider, there are options that suit most abilities from a walking trek to something more adventurous. Icelandic Ponies are a fun way to explore some of the wilderness up north and companies such as Iceland Horses offer excursions in the Highlands.

What sets Icelandic Ponies apart from other breeds is they have a pace called tolting which is between a trot and a canter and you normally use a western saddle which is more like being in an armchair than a saddle. Iceland ponies are particularly good on difficult terrain and they feel at home on surfaces you would be wary of with other breeds.

It is also possible to do beach rides in Scotland. One reason beach rides are such fun is sand is a great surface for cantering or galloping on. This is an activity definitely more suited to experienced riders and places such as Sea Cliff Stables in East Lothian offer this experience.
